Case Study: Performance Management at Intermountain Healthcare
Kuan-Chung (Bill) Wu HPM540: Professor Kamke HPM540: Case Study 3: Performance Management at Intermountain Healthcare 1. What is your evaluation of the Performance Management framework created at Intermountain Healthcare? â⬠The Performance Management (PM) framework created by Intermountain has gotten a model for some medicinal services associations. Intermountainââ¬â¢s PM framework incorporates the accompanying components: 1) Identifying six most significant execution measures, 2) Developing objectives for various gatherings inside the association, and 3) actualizing the objectives by making a motivating force remuneration scheme. This PM framework configuration has demonstrated to be powerful in numerous point of view, extending from singular staff to organization and to the association all in all. First and above all, this PM framework adjusts Intermoutainââ¬â¢s crucial qualities/responsibilities to its workers and their exhibitions. Their workers and organization don't si mply discuss their qualities, they live those qualities â⬠resolving to best practice with quality and accountability.Secondly, this PM framework is compelling in views of valuable and helpful as improvement instrument and managerial apparatus. The framework not just permits organization to accountably planned, executed, came to, and assessed the objectives for various gatherings in the association, yet in addition permits representatives to connected and contribute authoritative objectives by building up their vocation and winning motivations. Thus, various gatherings in the association had the option to stay concentrated on achieving all the objectives all in all team.Lastly, most representatives in Intermountain had positive and reasonable perspectives for the PM framework. For instance, representatives in Intermountain communicated shame, as opposed to grumblings of not getting impetuses, when they didn't arrive at a specific goal, even it was missed by under 1%. Finally, thi s PM framework permitted organization and supervisory crew at Intermountain to successfully and precisely measure worker execution, for example, utilizing adjusted scorecard and information appeared in Exhibit 8 and 12, just as the expense of giving services. The PM framework made by Intermountain has served to be a model for medicinal services associations to confront future difficulties because of the Affordable Care Act just as different changes in the idea of maintaining a social insurance business. Ultimately, they had the option to understand the objective of selecting and holding the best workers. 2. In what ways would it be able to upgrade or take away from the association's vital targets? â⬠There were numerous ways this technique could upgrade the organizationââ¬â¢s key objectives.First, the significant exhibition measurements were recognized â⬠these established the 10,000 foot view of the association procedure and permitted the master plan to stream right down to each individual staff. Everybody in the association could all think about organizationââ¬â¢s targets and focus on accomplishing them. In addition, as portrayed in a the segment of Clinical Goals, this framework permitted the objectives of five components of exhibitions to stream in a topdown design, the objectives for the Clinical Goals were created in a base up fashion. This empowered the association to have a ceaseless hover of execution the executives circle like Figure 10-1 in the reading material, which shows a linkage from hierarchical procedures to criticisms gathered from authoritative outcomes. The manners in which that this framework would take away from organizationââ¬â¢s vital target is the money for actualizing these methodologies, as referenced in last area of the article. The clinical presentation improvement activity had brought about income losses. If Intermountain needed more money available, this exhibition the executives framework would not work so productiv ely. The other way that could diminish the vital goal is that information could be controlled to make the exhibitions 1|Page Kuan-Chung (Bill) Wu HPM540: Professor Kamke looked well on the chart/table/figures. This is on the grounds that the impetuses is produced by acceptable information, and it is simple for these information to be controlled. 3. How are doctor impetuses at Intermountain extraordinary? For what reason did they adopt an ifferent strategy to doctor execution when contrasted with different representatives? â⬠Physician impetuses at Intermountain are one of a kind since doctors are isolated into two gatherings (utilized and non-utilized adjusted) and motivation plans intended for each gathering have various projects. For utilized doctors, three methodologies were executed for impetuses: 1) Peer pressure, in which open conversation where held to look at physiciansââ¬â¢ execution, 2) Public Recognition, in which best practice was perceived at the corporate level, and 3) fiscal motivating forces for meeting clinical standards. For non-utilized, adjusted doctors, who represents 2/3 all doctors utilizing Intermountain, the association has received the procedure to connect with these doctors through shared rivalry and a dependence on scholastic writing and inward information in a given clinical region. Here we can see that there are a great deal of doctor correspondence and commitment for supporting doctors to get motivating forces, which are unexpected methodologies in comparison to different representatives, for example, supervisors and staffs who acquires impetuses through accomplishing individual and corporate level goals. In my assessment, doctors have their motivators unique in relation to simply financial impetuses is on the grounds that social insurance is an assistance business and doctors are the communities for giving various types of administrations to patients. By and large, doctors are the chiefs who may impact the result of these ad ministrations. Along these lines, it is fundamental for doctors to realize what each other is doing with straightforward and proof based interchanges so the powerful administrations can be learned and executed by various physicians. Moreover, the expanded correspondence would improve the part of composed consideration which would help both the doctor and associations to decrease the expense of their administrations. The other explanation that various methodologies were executed for doctors may be on the grounds that they have just been procuring significant levels of remuneration and need something else than money related impetuses, interestingly with the individuals who are in human services organization. 4. By what means may this framework likewise improve the exhibition examination process? ââ¬Performance examinations are utilized to evaluate an employeeââ¬â¢s execution and give a stage to input about past, current, and future execution desires. In Intermountainââ¬â¢s exec ution the executives framework, there is a consistent objective turn of events and usage, just as criticisms to the senior administration. The senior supervisory crew at that point gives proposals to the gathering that builds up the organizationââ¬â¢s objective to ensure what the association expects for everybody. As it were, the desires, regardless of whether they are past, current, or future, are straightforward to all employees.Another angle that I accept this framework assists with improving the presentation evaluation process in its employments. The course book expresses that associations for the most part use execution examination process in two clashing manners â⬠regulatory and formative. In any case, Intermountainââ¬â¢s execution the executives framework appeared to determine this clashing issue by its motivation remuneration conspire. As portrayed by Dan Zuhlke, the Vice President of Intermountain HR, the potential reward or motivating force depends on the satisfa ction of the blend of individual level objectives and corporate level goals. This assists with tackling the contention of employments in light of the fact that both managerial and formative activities can be practiced at the same time under this framework. Ultimately, under the doctor impetus framework, open conversations and shared rivalry permitted doctors to increase helpful criticism or improvement thoughts from others. The doctor motivation framework basically filled in as a virtual stage for parental figures to realize what the desires are. 2|Page

Guest Post Simmons Hall Finishes 18,239 Piece Puzzle
Guest Post Simmons Hall Finishes 18,239 Piece Puzzle The following is a guest entry by Patrick L. 17 Just before 9 pm on February 28th, the 18,239th and final piece was placed into the puzzle in private dining. In all of the reviews that I saw while doing research on this puzzle, nobody was able to finish in less than 8 months. It took Simmons 40 days and 5 hours. I am incredibly grateful for the help and support that so many people provided in order to make this the success that it was. To most of you, this puzzle probably ranged somewhere from a pleasant distraction to a moderate disturbance, but to me, it was a reminder of why I had come to love Simmons so much over the last two and a half years. About two months ago, I approached our outgoing and incoming presidents-Kate and Yuge-with a crazy idea: what if we ordered a 34,000 piece puzzle to leave out in Simmons for people to solve over IAP? If this were anywhere else, they probably would have chuckled at the joke that I had just made. But this is Simmons, so they knew that I was dead serious, and they responded with a level of excitement that Iâve come to expect during my time here. After an enthusiastic conversation about jigsaw puzzles and some negotiations over the size of the one that we would be getting, we had one picked out and ready to order. The first day was a huge success. After an hour in which nobody showed up, followed by another hour in which my friends from Party Lounge were the only people around, people finally started showing up in the numbers that we had been hoping for. A group of six of us worked for most of the evening and didnât call it quits until well into the night. We didnât put in as many pieces as I had expected that day, but the ultimate takeaway was a good one: if a group of people that I had never met were willing to put hours of their day into working on this project, then there was no doubt in my mind that this was going to get done. Peopleâs level of interest was a truly amazing thing to see. Everyone from my friends, to most of the dining staff, to President Reif stopped by at one point or another to check up on our progress. After a while, I couldnât have a conversation with anyone in the dorm without the puzzle inevitably coming up. I quickly lost count of the number of times that I had to tell people that there were 18,000 pieces or explain that we only had half of the edges because the puzzle came in four sections. Yet, it never got old, because I was amazed at how many people were willing to express their interest in a project that appeared so mundane. Soon, people from throughout the Simmons community were doing whatever they could to make this a success. Nika made arrangements for us to be able to use dining, private dining, and late night throughout the time that we had the puzzle out. Josh ordered some Insomnia Cookies to get more people involved in the cause. Ellen donated a light and provided us with a great 7K display to generate support. Joseff took a time lapse of a substantial portion of the process and got photos of the end. House Government gave us a $500 budget to spend on food to support the cause. Residents from throughout the dorm provided us with lights, a magnifying glass, speakers, and a slew of other things to help make the process as successful and enjoyable as possible. And, of course, dozens of people managed to find time in their busy schedules to stop by, put in some pieces, and make the process go just a little bit better. When we were in the process of putting in the final pieces earlier tonight, I took the time to look around at the group of people who were still working on this after almost 6 weeks. I saw one of the first friends I made when I got to MIT, a few people that I had gotten to know well over the past year or two, and several close friends that I hadnât even met just two months ago. Only Simmons can do that well of a job of bringing people together. So thank you everyone who helped to turn this crazy thought into a reality. Iâm convinced that Simmons is one of the only places in the world that could successfully provide the manpower, the resources, and the general culture of optimism and enthusiasm needed to successfully pull something like this off. And for that, I will always be grateful. Thank you. Post Tagged #Simmons Hall

National Origin, Accents and the Law Although employers generally feel justified in denying immigrants employment based on the needs of their businesses, immigrants have regularly filed discriminating lawsuits against these companies since the 1980ââ¬â¢s under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which protects immigrants from being discriminated against based on their national origin (Texas Law Review, 20xx, p. 1496). Title VII has been used to litigate against employers who institute English-only rules as non-native English immigrants equate this to national origin discrimination (Texas Law review, 20XX, p. 1496). It seems that under the civil rights act of 1964, these individuals would have a legitimate claim of discrimination but despite the strong links, courts rarely rule in favor of the plaintiffs in these cases. The Prince vs. Henry V Free Essays
The Prince vs. Henry V A comparison of attributes After reading Machiavelliââ¬â¢s The Prince and watching Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Henry V in class, one begins to notice similarities between the authorsââ¬â¢ idea of what a ââ¬Å"perfect kingâ⬠should be. The patterns between the ideal ruler of Shakespeare and the ideal ruler of Machiavelli can be seen in numerous instances throughout this story. We will write a custom essay sample on The Prince vs. Henry V or any similar topic only for you Order Now For the duration of this essay, I will compare the similarities in both pieces to give the reader a better understanding of how Shakespeare devised his view of what a ââ¬Å"perfect kingâ⬠should be. One can see an example while looking back on Henryââ¬â¢s youthful experiences. Before taking oath as king, Henry was involved with some scrupulous characters. He would party, stay out all night, and defile his fatherââ¬â¢s wishes. But after becoming king, Henry shunned this former lifestyle and become the individual of greatness we know today. As Machiavelli stated, ââ¬Å"So a prince should be so prudent that he knows how to escape the evil reputation attached to those vices which could lose him his state, and how to avoid those vices which are not so dangerous, if he possibly can; but, if he cannot, he need not worry so much about the latter. And then, he must not flinch from being blamed for vices which are necessary for safeguarding the state. This is because, taking everything into account, he will find that some of the things that appear to be virtues will, if he practices them, ruin him, and some of the things that appear wicked will bring him security and prosperity. â⬠(Machiavelli) If looked at closely, this is exactly what Henry had done. He used this youthful expression to gain favor with the layperson and look even better when he took the throne. This act of ââ¬Å"smoke and mirrorsâ⬠worked to his advantage and backs up Machiavelliââ¬â¢s claims. As Machiavelli says, ââ¬Å"From this arises the following question: Whether it is better to be loved than feared, or the reverse. The answer is that one would like to be both the one and the other; but because it is difficult to combine them, it is far better to be feared than loved if you cannot be both. â⬠(Machiavelli) During Henryââ¬â¢s speech at Harfleur, one can see this point in action. While speaking to the governor, Henry literally scares the people of Harfleur into submission and gains entry to the city without further fighting. This shows a definite similarity in what Machiavelli and Shakespeare view in their leader. As a king, Henry becomes known for being a man of resilience, strategy, and combat. These traits, according to Machiavelli, are necessary to become the ââ¬Å"ideal king. â⬠As stated by Machiavelli, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦a prince ought to have no other aim or thought, nor select anything else for his study, than war and its rules and discipline; for this is the sole art that belongs to him who rules. (Machiavelli) This can be seen when the Dauphin presents Henry with a gift of tennis balls and an insulting speech practically telling him to stay out of grown menââ¬â¢s affairs. This gives Henry the leverage he needs to start a war with France without looking like the instigator. He can now put the blame of war on the Dauphin and the many lives of who m will be killed. Henry uses this to move toward his strength and show his full potential. Another example can be seen when Henry has to hang Bardolph for plundering during the invasion of France. Years earlier, while drinking in the tavern, Bardolph had asked Prince Henry this question, ââ¬Å"Do not thou, when thou art king, hang a thief? â⬠Prince Henry replied, ââ¬Å"No, thou shalt. â⬠(Branagh, Scofield and Holm) In this instance, one can see Henry is following his Machiavellian ways. This can be shown in the following passage. Machiavelli states, ââ¬Å"The prince should nonetheless make himself feared in such a way that, if he is not loved, at least he escapes being hated; and the prince can always avoid hatred if he abstains from the property of his subjects and citizens and from their women. If, even so, it proves necessary to execute someone, this should be done only when there is proper justification and manifest reason for it. But above all, a prince should abstain from the property of others; because men sooner forget the death of their father than the loss of their patrimony. â⬠(Machiavelli) Bardolph had been warned of this many years earlier. Henry was just following up on this promise. For this last example, I will quote Machiavelli for almost the last time. He states, ââ¬Å"The fact is that a man who wants to act virtuously in every way necessarily comes to grief among so many who are not virtuous. Therefore, if a prince wants to maintain his rule, he must learn how not to be virtuous, and to make use of this or not according to need. â⬠(Machiavelli) This can be seen on the night before the last battle. Henry disguises himself as a common soldier by borrowing Erpinghamââ¬â¢s cloak and spying on his troops. Henry does this to ensure his troops are mentally prepared and in high morale. What he finds is a mixed morale within his troops and makes him prepare even harder for the upcoming battle. Henry uses this ââ¬Å"cloakâ⬠as a tool to find the weaknesses in his army and then exploits them with his inspiring speech before the battle begins. This Machiavellian act could have been the turning point and major reason they won against an outnumbering, French army. As seen throughout the film, the similarities between Machiavelliââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"ideal princeâ⬠and Shakespeareââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"perfect kingâ⬠are too many to count. A blend of old and new attributes created this timeless character in which we are still learning from today. One can only hope the few examples given will give the reader a better understanding of were Shakespeare derives his perfect, Machiavellian king from. To finish, a famous quote from Machiavelli, ââ¬Å"The end justifies the means. â⬠(Machiavelli) Works Cited Henry V. Dir. Kenneth Branagh. Perf. Kenneth Branagh, et al. 1989. Managerial Economics
Every organization faces numerous problems and challenges. Some of them are minor, the others are crucial. Many come as a part of the companyââ¬â¢s planning process, and some are brought due to certain new opportunities. Whatever they are, decision-making process lies at the very core.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on Managerial Economics ââ¬â A pharmaceutical Company specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More It is always a delicate balance between a desire to maximize companyââ¬â¢s revenue and success and an increased risk to make things worse. Managerial economics ââ¬Ëlargely uses the body of economic concepts and principlesââ¬â¢, which can help to make a decision making easier by considering such factors as supply and demand, cost-benefit, market structure, efficiency and others (Atmanand 2009, p. 11). In this paper, I will describe and analyze according to managerial economics concepts a challenge that an organization I have worked in once faced. A Challenge Description A pharmaceutical company faces a significant research and development decision (so-called RD). To get a new drug to merchandise, a company has to invest in medical research. Moreover, the firm can choose between two different research approaches and, accordingly, get either low fixed costs and high variable costs or vice versa. Why is This Decision Complicated? In the situation described above, a decision that needs to be taken is whether to commercialize the research or not. Besides, if the company does decide to invest, which approach should it choose? The biggest difficulty here is a period of time since nobody can be sure when the research would be completed ââ¬â it can take a decade or even more. Besides, no guarantees about the outcomes can be made because all efforts still can come to nothing. Moreover, ââ¬Ëeven after significant investment and results the launch of a firmââ¬â¢s product in a m arket is not certain â⬠¦ because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) â⬠¦ can approve or reject a firms petition to launch in the marketââ¬â¢ (Rao 2014, p. 2). There are also other factors to take into consideration, such as the market value of a future product and the costs of the research. Additionally to the question of costs, there is a dilemma about fixed and variable expenses.Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Six Steps of Managerial Economics To understand this problem better and find an adequate solution, let us define six steps of a decision-making process of managerial economics. Defining a Problem The first step is determining a question and clarifying a decision that has to be made. According to Samuelson and Marks (2012, p. 6), at this stage, it is important to answer the following questions: ââ¬ËWhat is the problem the manager faces? Who is t he decision maker? What is the decision setting or context, and how does it influence managerial objectives or options?ââ¬â¢. The problem is already accurately described above. It is whether to invest or not and what exactly approach to choose. The decision maker is a director of the company. Finally, this issue has a direct impact on business objectives and options because if the company does not invest, it has to find alternative ways to get a new product to market. Defining the Objective At the second step, an organization has to determine precisely its goals and objectives, as well as consider possible outcomes (Samuelson and Marks 2012, p. 7). The goal of the pharmaceutical company, first of all, is to succeed and increase its revenue. Since the pharmaceutical industry is ââ¬Ëfundamentally based in research and development (RD)ââ¬â¢, for this purpose, an organization is planning to commercialize a particular study and get a unique and brand new product to sell (Schweit zer 2007, p. 21). There are three major outcomes here: research does not succeed at all, it succeeds but does not meet the companyââ¬â¢s demands (such as the period of time or the quality of an end-product), or the result of the research satisfies the company completely. Consequently, the RD decision can become either a valuable investment (in a varying degree) or a waste of the companyââ¬â¢s budget. Finding and Exploring the Alternatives Investments are always the ââ¬Ëtrade-offs between present and future benefits and costsââ¬â¢ (Samuelson and Marks 2012, p. 8). Commercializing the project means sacrificing profits today in order to get possible greater benefits in several years (from 5 to 10 in this case). Hence, it is the main alternative ââ¬â to get the profit quicker, but less of it. At this step, a decision maker should also determine the variables that are under his or her control (Samuelson and Marks 2012, p. 9). The research outcome is unpredictable while ea rnings that can be made in not so distant future are more accurate and specific. On the other hand, without a new product to sell a drug company usually gets only average incomes.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on Managerial Economics ââ¬â A pharmaceutical Company specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Besides the biggest dilemma, there are also several others. For example, if an organization decides to invest, it, in its turn, brings a lot of alternatives, such as the sphere of investigation, the expenses of the research, a firm or company to invest in and so on. An organization has different options, actually: considering a biochemical RD program, biogenetic program, etc. Samuelson and Marks (2012, p. 9) state that ââ¬Ëmost managerial decisions involve more than a once-and-for-all choice from among a set of optionsââ¬â¢, and that is true. To increase its chances, the company can pursue various programs at the same time or in sequence. There is also an option to invest in several programs but commercialize the one that turns up to be more promising after some time of observation. The last alternative is about fixed and variable costs. Besides, an organization can always conduct research in-house if it has enough facilities and resources for that. Predicting the Consequences The obvious next step is building a model based on the impact every possible companyââ¬â¢s decision will have on its regular work. In case the pharmaceutical firm does not invest at all and can not conduct its own in-house research, it has no chances to provide a new drug; therefore, there is a risk of business decline. On the other hand, if it invests and loses the money (entirely or partly), this will hit on the budget. A situation in which the company focuses on several projects either to invest in them simultaneously or to supply both of those and then commercialize the most promising one has the least ad verse effects in the future. The last consequence to predict is the one of choosing fixed and variable expenses. According to Sexton (2015, p. 296), ââ¬Ëfixed costs are those costs that do not vary with the level of outputââ¬â¢. Variable costs, respectively, depend on the companyââ¬â¢s production volume. Therefore, by choosing small variable costs, the drug company will be in pole position if the research succeeds. On the other hand, if an investigation comes to nothing or does not meet the companyââ¬â¢s demands completely, an organization can minimize the negative impact of that by choosing low fixed costs. Besides, this decision should depend on the ratio between the costs needed to produce the drug and its price on the market. The demand for an end-product should also be taken into consideration. Making a Choice According to Samuelson and Marks (2012. p. 11), ââ¬Ëthis step (along with step 4) occupies the lionââ¬â¢s share of the analysis and discussionââ¬â¢. When all possible outcomes and their impacts on business are already predicted, a decision maker can determine a preferred course of action. So, the pharmaceutical company chooses the research approach with low variable costs. Besides, it also decides to conduct its own study.Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? Firstly, the drug company considers the RD productivity, which can be defined ââ¬Ëas the relationship between the value (medical and commercial) created by a new medicineâ⬠¦ and the investments required to generate that medicineââ¬â¢ (Paul et al. 2010, p. 204). Since the research the company is going to invest in is aimed to develop a medication to dissolve blood clots, it has high both medical and commercial value. Secondly, to minimize its risks in case the research does not succeed, an organization chooses low fixed costs. Finally, as far as the company has enough recourses to do this, it also decides to conduct the in-house research as well. So, all possible risks are calculated and prevented, and the decision is adequate. Reference List Atmanand. 2009. Managerial Economics. 2nd ed. New Delhi: Excel Books India. Paul, S. M., Mytelka, D.
